My Visit to Ukraine

I created this randomizer in June 2025, during the third year of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

I was fortunate to visit the country in peacetime—in the summer of 2016, during the first year of my 777-day round-the-world trip. I stayed with a friendly Couchsurfing host in Lviv and later reunited with some travel buddies in Kyiv. We took a day trip to Chernobyl, and I continued my journey on an overnight train to Moldova.

I have many fond memories of Ukraine, and I truly hope foreign visitors can once again enjoy the country’s beauty and warmth in the near future.

(As some of you might have recognized, the photo at the top is not from an active modern city. Instead, the photo is from the abandoned suburbs of Pripyat near Chernobyl as I couldn’t find my other photos from Ukraine while creating this randomizer.)

About a Sustainable Travel Blog Page

From traveling to surprise destinations to building tools for others, randomness has shaped this site in unexpected ways. This Ukrainian city picker is one of the latest additions—and many more can be found on the Random Generators page.

I’ve also made city randomizers for all but one of Ukraine’s neighbors: Belarus, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia. (Sorry, Moldovans—I’m focusing on bigger countries now, but I still enjoyed your country!)
