For this randomizer, only towns with at least 10,000 people made the cut. This generator features 151 towns in Switzerland, based on the 2025 city list from World Population Review.
If you play with the randomizer for a while, you might notice that parts of Zurich can also appear as numbered kreises. These are 12 legally separate districts of Zurich.

My Random Experiences in Switzerland
I’ve visited a completely random town in Austria, but not in Switzerland. Still, a random encounter in 2012 deeply shaped my relationship with the country.
During my first solo trip in Europe, I was trying to cut costs by sleeping in train stations. I attempted this in Zurich—unaware that the station would close for the night. A local noticed me wandering around and came to check if I needed help. When she heard I planned to sleep at the station, she told me it wasn’t possible.
What she did next was incredible: right then and there, she offered to host me.
She was a Couchsurfer who had hosted travelers before. I knew about Couchsurfing and planned to try it later, but I had no prior experience. I accepted her offer, and despite a decades-wide age gap, we shared mutual interests and became friends.
After that, I visited her several times during later trips to Switzerland—and even met her in Africa when we happened to be there at the same time.

This website began with stories from my own travels, but evolved with randomness at its heart. This Swiss city picker is one of many randomness-based tools I’ve created to spark curiosity and inspiration. I’ve also made similar city randomizers for Switzerland’s neighbors: Austria, France, Germany, and Italy.
(I have also visited Liechtenstein, but there are not enough cities there for a randomizer.)
