My Unplanned Stay in Sofia
I haven’t visited a random city in Bulgaria, but I did make an unplanned stop in the capital, Sofia. This was in summer 2016, near the beginning of what became a two-year trip around the world.
My plan was to stay in Sofia for just one night before continuing to Istanbul. However, right before boarding my train from Romania, I heard about a terrorist attack at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport. With limited information, I decided to stay in Bulgaria longer to wait and see how the situation developed.
My train from Romania to Sofia was delayed, and I remember feeling nervous as I searched for my hostel late at night. A few years earlier, I had been mugged in Italy during my first solo trip, so I tried to avoid walking around unfamiliar cities after dark.
Thankfully, my arrival went smoothly, and my stay in Sofia turned out to be very enjoyable. I explored the city with a Mexican student who was visiting Europe for the first—and probably only—time. With little time available, he was determined to see as much as he could, believing he might never get another chance to return.
The photo at the top is from one of my days exploring Sofia with that student.
About This Site
Years ago, I traveled to a completely random place anywhere in the world. Inspired by that journey, I began making random destination generators for others. This Bulgarian city generator is one of over 100 randomizers now featured on this site. I’ve made similar city generators for most European countries, including Bulgaria’s neighbors Greece, Romania, Serbia, and Turkey (sorry North Macedonia, I still love you!).
