For one reason or another, you are here to use a random American name generator. Perhaps you are thinking of American names for a baby, or for an original character (OC). The names in the list come from America, but may also appear in other English-speaking countries like the United Kingdom.

When I created this randomizer, I wanted it to serve all of these purposes. Because of this, the randomizer allows you to adjust the results in several ways. Perhaps you only want names for men or women, or you want to focus on modern or traditional names.

About the Random American Names

The first names in this random American name generator come from the official site of the Social Security Administration of the United States. Modern names are those popular today, while traditional names were popular throughout the 1900s. Some names appear in both eras. The surnames in this list are the 10,000 most common surnames in the U.S. Census.

As the names come from official statistics, they represent several different ethnicities. I decided to keep the statistics as they are instead of filtering out names with different backgrounds. Because of this, some first and last name combinations may seem very unlikely.
