Why Are Spanish Names Starting with U So Rare?
Spanish names beginning with U are rare. Only a small set of traditional U names have developed, such as Ubaldo, Urbano, and Úrsula. In modern Spain, some U names appear through Basque influence (Unai, Uxue, Urko), biblical or classical revivals (Uriel, Ulises), and immigration.
Surnames beginning with U are somewhat more common because many come from place names.
