My Stay in Andalusia
I have been to Spain four times. My first destination in the country was an unusual one: Guadix, a small mountain town in the province of Granada.
How did I end up there? The answer: home exchange.
When I was a kid, our family was part of an international home exchange network. For several years in a row, we would swap homes with another European family for two weeks. Our fourth destination was Guadix in 1999—and it’s the one I remember the most.
I was 7 years old when we visited Guadix, and I remember much more about that journey than I do about our three previous exchanges. We swapped homes with the town’s mayor and her family, and their kids’ friends hung out with us as well. I especially remember playing hide and seek and Cool Boarders on PSX with the local kids.
We spent time with the locals and followed their example—which led to a mistake on my part. As the local kids drank from the town’s fountain, I followed suit, not realizing that my foreign stomach might not handle the local bacteria.
Let’s just say I learned my lesson.

This random Spanish city generator joins many others I’ve created after a long, unexpected journey to a place I chose at random. The idea of randomness stuck—and this site now hosts generators on travel, games, and more. I’ve also made a similar city randomizer for Spain’s only neighbor, Portugal, and over 20 other European countries.
