Here is a list of Spanish names that start with Q. The page includes Spanish names for boys and girls from different eras, as well as last names.

The list is divided into several sections. Most modern and traditional names and surnames are drawn from the official statistics of Spain’s National Institute of Statistics. Modern names are those popular today, while traditional names were popular throughout the 1900s. Some names appear in both eras.

All of the names also appear in my Random Spanish Name Generator.

As the modern names come from official statistics, not all of them are “ethnically” Spanish. However, I decided to keep the statistics as they are instead of filtering out names with different backgrounds.

Why Are Spanish Names Starting with Q So Rare?

Spanish names beginning with Q are rare mainly because of how the letter works in Spanish spelling and pronunciation. In Spanish, Q almost always appears only in the combination “qu” before e or i (as in que or qui). It also produces the same sound as the much more common letter C, and because of this overlap, most names that might otherwise begin with Q historically developed with C instead.

As a result, only a small number of traditional names such as Quintín or Quiteria formed, and modern usage remains limited. Surnames with Q are slightly more common because many come from place names or older regional forms.
