Here is a list of German names that start with G. The page includes German names for boys and girls from different eras, as well as last names.

The list is divided into several sections. The modern names are baby names and other names popular in the 2000s, while the traditional names are those common among people born in the 1900s. Some names that have remained popular over the years appear on both lists.

Most of the first names come from data provided by Beliebte-Vornamen.de, a site that lists the most common German names over the years. The surnames are the 1,000 German family names that are currently the most popular. All of the names also appear in my Random German Name Generator.

There are more modern than traditional names on the lists, as I’ve used a larger pool of modern names. The names popular in the 2000s include the 500 most common German names today, as well as the top 10 names from previous years, while the results from the 1900s only include the top 10 names for each year. Therefore, the lengths of the lists don’t necessarily imply that a particular initial has become more popular over the years.

Why Are German Names Starting with G So Uncommon?

Names beginning with G have always been relatively uncommon in Germany. The letter tends to produce hard, heavy consonant sounds that fell out of favor as naming tastes shifted toward softer openings like L, M, and S. Many older G-names such as Gerhard, Gisela, and Gertrud originated in medieval Germanic traditions and later came to sound dated or formal.

Few new G-names emerged to replace them, and the ones that did (like Gabriel or Greta) often came from biblical or international sources rather than native roots. As a result, G has remained a relatively quiet initial in both male and female German names.
