From the 1960s to the 1990s, S-names dominated French female naming. Names like Sylvie, Sabrina, and Sophie were modern-sounding, international, and easy to pronounce.
This led to saturation — by the 1990s, almost everyone knew several Sylvies or Sandrines.
As a result, these names became strongly generation-marked, much like Nathalie or Isabelle did a decade earlier.
When a letter is too dominant, parents often turn away from it for at least one or two generations.
