Male J-names, once ubiquitous in France, have sharply declined. Because they were so widespread, they turned into “dad” or “grandpa” names by the 1990s. When a cluster of names becomes too common, it usually collapses in popularity as parents look for fresher alternatives.
Throughout much of the 20th century, compound names beginning with Jean- were a hallmark of French male naming. Since the 1980s, however, that tradition has almost completely disappeared.
