Random Town in Ireland Generator
The definition of a city varies by country. In Ireland, it’s especially murky. Up until 2014, cities, boroughs, urban districts, and towns with town commissioners had separate legal statuses—but these were abolished in reforms that took effect in 2015.
Before the changes, only five or six places in the Republic of Ireland were considered cities: Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford—with Kilkenny holding a ceremonial title. But a random city generator with just five options wouldn’t be very exciting. So instead, I’ve included all 85 Irish towns, boroughs, and cities listed on Wikipedia.

A Random Irish Encounter
I’ve been to Ireland just once—and my destination was a bit unusual: Killarney, a small town in southwestern Ireland. That was back in 2000, during my childhood, when my family did our final home exchange trip and swapped houses with an Irish family for two weeks.
(The old photo at the top is from that visit.)
I haven’t returned to Ireland since, but one of my siblings had a remarkable follow-up. Years later, while living abroad, they met an Irish man—who turned out to be the best friend of one of our original home exchange hosts!
Sometimes the world really is small.

What connects Irish cities to a travel site like this? Randomness! This generator is one of over 100 tools I’ve created after years of letting chance shape my travels—even choosing destinations using darts and beach balls. I’ve also made a similar randomizer for Ireland’s closest neighbor, the United Kingdom, as well as over 20 other countries in Europe.
