Here is a list of Italian names that start with Y. The page includes Italian names for boys and girls from different eras, as well as last names.

The list is divided into several sections. The modern names are baby names and other names popular in the 2000s. I also searched for traditional names common among people born during the Renaissance.

The names in this list come from multiple sources: modern Italian baby names popular in the 2000s, the 1,000 most common Italian surnames today, and historical names from the Italian Renaissance of the 1400s. However, I couldn’t find any traditional Italian names beginning with Y, and the initial is also uncommon in modern names.

All of the names also appear in my Random Italian Name Generator.

As the modern names come from official statistics, not all of them are “ethnically” Italian. However, I decided to keep the statistics as they are instead of filtering out names with different backgrounds.

Why Are Italian Names Beginning with Y So Rare?

Italian names beginning with Y are rare because the letter Y has never been part of the traditional Italian alphabet and does not represent a native Italian sound. In Latin it appeared mainly in learned Greek loanwords, but as Italian developed, those words were adapted to use I instead.

The few Y names seen in Italy today are modern imports. Ylenia is a notable exception, as it is a modern Italian creation, popularized in the late 20th century.
