Italian names that start with X: are there any? Here are all popular Italian X names for boys and girls as well as surnames that I could find.
During the creation of a random Italian name generator, I made lists like these for Italian names starting with all the letters of the alphabet. However, X is the only initial with no common names, so this page is practically empty.
A full list would have been divided into several sections. The modern names would have been baby names and other names popular in the 2000s, while the traditional names would have been those common among people born during the Renaissance. Some names that have remained popular over the years could have appeared on both lists.
The names in this list come from multiple sources: modern Italian baby names popular in the 2000s, the 1,000 most common Italian surnames today, and historical names from the Italian Renaissance of the 1400s. However, my search was fruitless, as I couldn’t find any Italian names beginning with X. Even name lists in Wikipedia yielded no results.
Why Are Italian Names Beginning with X So Rare?
Italian names beginning with X are extremely rare because the letter X never belonged to the traditional Italian alphabet and had no role in spoken Italian. Classical Latin did use X, but Italian evolved by replacing it with simpler sounds such as ss, sci, or cs.
As a result, no native Italian given names or surnames developed with X at the start. The few modern Italian residents with X names typically have foreign-origin names.
