Here is a list of French names that start with U. The page includes the few French names for boys and girls that start with U – and explains why such names are so uncommon.

French Last Names with Letter U

There are no popular French surnames that start with U. Most French surnames developed in the Middle Ages from given names, occupations, nicknames, or places. Very few native French words begin with U, explaining the initial’s absence in surnames.

Why Are Names Starting with U So Uncommon?

Traditional French naming drew heavily from the Catholic calendar, where “U” saints are rare: Urbain (Urban) and Ulysse (mythological, not religious) for boys, and only Ursule from Saint Ursula of Cologne for girls. Ursule became almost a caricature of an old-fashioned name after the 1900s, and it has not reappeared.
