Here is a list of French names that start with O. The page includes French names for boys and girls from different eras, as well as last names.

The list is divided into several sections. The modern names are baby names and other names popular in the 2000s, while the traditional names are those common among people born in the 1900s.

The names come from data provided by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, with a few additions from Wikipedia, Reddit and other sources. All of the names also appear in my Random French Name Generator.

Relatively few French names start with the letter O. Historically, French phonetics and naming traditions favored other vowel initials such as A, E, and I, which were more common in Latin roots and in the names of Christian saints. Latin words that began with “O” often evolved into forms starting with other vowels or consonants in Old French, so the language simply produced fewer native O-names.

The O-names that do exist in France tend to come from foreign or literary influences rather than long-standing local traditions. For example, Olivier is derived from the word for “olive tree,” and names like Océane and Ophélie appeared much later, inspired by poetic or modern tastes. As a result, French names starting with O remain relatively rare, even though a few have found lasting popularity.
