Why Are American Names Beginning with F Now So Rare?

American first names beginning with F are relatively uncommon today. Many classic F-names (such as Frank, Frederick, or Florence) now feel dated. Only a few, such as Faith or Felix, have maintained steady use.

F-surnames, however, are much more common because American last names largely come from English, German, Irish, Spanish, and other European family names. Many of those languages naturally produced surnames beginning with F. As a result, F remains visible in American last names even though it is less common in contemporary first names.
