Random City in Japan
This randomizer includes all 815 cities in Japan, based on the official city list on Wikipedia.
One interesting feature of this list is Tokyo: while Tokyo is commonly thought of as a single metropolis, it is officially divided into 23 “special wards,” each of which functions like an individual city. Therefore, this generator includes each Tokyo ward separately, giving a more detailed view of Japan’s capital area.
The list covers every official city in Japan. This means you can get results ranging from vast urban hubs like Osaka and Nagoya to smaller, lesser-known cities that are rarely visited by tourists.

My Long-Awaited Visit to Japan
I did not visit Japan during my 2-year trip around the world. The main reason for this was not that I wasn’t interested in the country, but quite the opposite. I was so interested in Japan that I didn’t want to make it just another stop in a longer trip.
It took some time, but finally in 2025, I made my first visit to Japan. The country was just as impressive as I had expected. I was particularly impressed by the hiking opportunities in the hills east of Nara. Finding a thousand-year-old Buddha carving on a hilltop in the middle of nowhere was an experience.
As many may guess from the baby deer, the photo at the top is from Nara.

This Japanese city randomizer is part of a larger project on this site, where I’ve created similar tools for dozens of countries. The idea started when I chose a surprise travel destination at random myself, and randomness has been a recurring theme ever since. You can find more randomizers covering nearby countries like China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Russia.
