My Visits to Indonesia
I have done two trips around the world: a mostly flightless one that lasted 777 days, and a shorter one that took two months. On both occasions, I spent a lot of time in Indonesia.
On the first trip, I entered Indonesia by crossing the border from Sabah (Malaysia) to Kalimantan (Indonesia) in eastern Borneo. The locals in Nunukan and Tarakan were not very used to foreign travelers, and local kids greeted me with joy.
Later, I met two Dutch backpackers and we joined forces traveling overland through the island of Java. On this journey, we had a restaurant experience that I often share when a relevant discussion pops up.
My travel buddies were vegan, avoiding all meat and animal-based products. This was a challenge in Indonesia, where locals rarely considered things like fish sauce and chicken meat.
Somewhere in the middle of Java, after a full day of travel, we found a promising restaurant: the menu was in English, and the waiter spoke great English as well. My friends asked if there were any meat-free options on the menu, and the waiter told us there was one option: steamed asparagus. No meat, the waiter assured repeatedly.
Not much of a dinner, but beggars can’t be choosers. My starved friends chose the asparagus and waited patiently for their food to arrive.
After a long wait, we were finally served our meal. My friends got the portion they had ordered, but the waiter and the menu had failed to mention one important thing about the asparagus:
It came with bacon crumbs on top.
