What Countries Speak English?

How do you define an English speaking country? There are many ways to define an English speaking country. For example, I could have used a list of countries where English is an official language. However, such a list would exclude the United States – that doesn’t have an official language – and include countries where English has an official status but is not widely understood.

In the end, I chose to include the 17 countries where English is the primary language. In other words, the random generator should have all the countries where English is spoken as a mother tongue by over 50 percent of the population.

Such a list includes places like bilingual Canada where 56 % speak English as a mother tongue. However, the list doesn’t include South Africa (with its 11 official languages) or India. Here’s a full list of countries in this random English speaking country generator:

This website, Arimo Travels, is a sustainable travel blog that I started during my 2-year trip around the world. Now the site focuses on sustainable travel guides. As you might have noticed, some results of the randomizer include links to my blog posts about the countries.

This is not the only random generator on Arimo Travels. For example, I’ve also created generators for Spanish and French speaking countries. You can see the full list of randomizers on the page Random Generators.

If you use this generator to pick a holiday destination or anything else, I’d love to hear about it! You can share your plans and results in the comment section below.

Creating this randomizer was interesting. It taught me a lot about different ways to define English speaking countries. In the end, I decided to use a quite strict definiton. If you worry about language barrier, remember that English is understood in most other countries as well.
