This British city picker chooses a random city in the UK. The generator includes all 79 official cities of the United Kingdom (plus London.)

For most people, a city means a large settlement. In the UK, though, a city is an official city only if a reigning monarch makes it so. Because of this, the London we all know is technically not a city.

This generator includes 81 possible results. These include the 76 official cities of the mainland United Kingdom, the four official cities in British Overseas Territories plus London. The generator is based on UK Population Data’s up-to-date list. The generator includes the eight towns that were made cities in 2022.

For those interested, I have also made a more specific randomizer for cities in England.

The Differences Between England, the United Kingdom and Great Britain

I’m assuming that most people who search for random cities in England are actually looking for cities in all of the United Kingdom. What is the difference between England, the United Kingdom and Great Britain?

The short answer: England is a part of the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom refers to the whole country and Great Britain is the country’s largest island.

Here’s a longer explanation:

England is the largest country within the United Kingdom, but it is not a sovereign state. The four countries that make up the United Kingdom are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom (The UK) is a sovereign state. In other words, the UK is a bit like the USA where smaller parts form a greater whole. The United States has 50 states, the United Kingdom has four countries. To make things a bit more confusing, the UK’s official name is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain, on the other hand, refers to the island of Britain that houses England, Scotland and Wales. Great Britain Excludes Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and British Overseas Territories.

I have created dozens of random generators for this website. These include multiple random destination generators. You can find them all on the Random Generators page.
